San Roque Old Golf Course San Roque Old Course

Distance: 0km
Web: www.sanroqueclub.com

The heart of the San Roque Club is the old course. Golfers can choose between the demanding par 72 of The Old Course, the original course designed by Dave Thomas, that winds through cork oak forests with superb mountain views.

A SPECIAL CHALLENGE ... THE OLD COURSE

At the foothills of the Sierra Bermeja, where the mountains meet the sea, is a legendary home for European golf Created in 1990. Designed by Dave Thomas with bunkers redesigned by Seve ballesteros, The Old Course is rated amongst the finest in Europe.

For many years it has played host to memorable moments for the young pretenders and old campaigners alike. The course's tight, sloping fairways are lined by mature cork oak trees - demanding straight, accurate driving. Strategic bunker placement and deceptive water hazards threaten all but the most precise approach shots. The greens are fast, contoured and true, rewarding well-judged putts and punishing anything else. Acknowledged for it's challenge throughout Europe, The Old Course provides a test for the very highest standard of golfer.

The front nine holes wind through the cork oak forests that the resort is famous for and give superb mountain views. The back nine is laid out across rolling hills and includes plunging, vertiginous carries that test a player's judgement of distance to the limit.  The closing holes incorporate the resort's shimmering lakes, presenting a finish as beautiful as it is challenging. Playing The Old Course is something every golfer will remember.

A magnificent Perry Dye/Seve Ballesteros on a natural park reserve with spectacular sea views.

A RISING STAR ... THE NEW COURSE

2002 saw work begin on the construction of The New Course - a second championship golf course at the Club. The new world class course - 6626 metres from the championship tees - aims to complement The Old Course, while presenting a very different challenge. The designs, by the renowned American course designer Perry Dye, incorporate the contours of the San Roque hills, giving golfers wonderful views to the Guadalquiton River and the Mediterranean Sea beyond.

The idea was to create a new course that is a challenge for scratch and low handicap golfers but that is also possible for higher handicap players to enjoy. To that end each hole has five different tee positions and fairways that are wider than those on The Old Course. Nevertheless, these fairways are designed to reward canny tactics and skilful drive placement. Water hazards guard four of the greens, also defended by more than a hundred strategic bunkers, which lie in wait for wayward or ambitious drivers.

The plentiful growth of mature cork oaks, San Roque's excellent weather, soil drainage and irrigation plus the expertise of our experienced team of green-keepers means that the club's new course - opening in 2003 - is expected to bed in quickly. It will then provide a thrilling alternative to the rigours of The Old Course.

Its long tees, wide fairways and generous-sized greens bear the mark of Trent Jones' typical design. The course is fully integrated into the surrounding natural beauty, and the variety of native vegetation - cork, pine and eucalyptus trees - makes this environment unique whilst at the same time increasing the course’s difficulty, making it a real challenge not just for professionals, but also top-notch amateurs.

This course, which boasts impressive views of the sea, the mountains and the Guadiaro river, has 18 holes (par 71). Internationally-known golfer Robert Trent designed what were originally the first nine holes, and are now the second nine thanks to the addition of nine more holes (now the first) designed by the well-known architecht Dave Thomas.
